GARC - Meeting

Monthly meeting of the Graduate Appalachian Research Community to discuss current projects and upcoming events. Our mission is to foster a supportive community in which students from various disciplines learn from each other's findings, discuss research obstacles and successes, can have a venue to present their Appalachian‐based research, and collaborate.

GARC - Social Hour

Come to a GARC Social Hour on Friday, November 4th from 4-6 pm at Girls Girls Girls! Girls Girls Girls! offers drinks of all types as well as a variety of appetizers and entrees. At this social hour, you will have the chance to meet other graduate students interested in Appalachia or from Appalachia, and to learn more about what GARC does. Hope to see you there!

Flood Relief Service Trip

Join us for a flood relief service trip to Perry County, Kentucky in partnership with the Housing Development Alliance. The trip will involve mucking & gutting homes so that the homeowners have a cleaner slate to start again. This means: removing mud/debris from homes and crawl spaces, removing damaged materials (insulation, drywall, floor coverings, etc…). Homes will then be treated with fungicide to ensure that the home and it’s occupants will not have to deal with unnecessary moisture and mold in the long-term.
 
Please register for participation in the trip here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSchSrPG6DxPp_Sp6lpuxaEPAiLp2CJ… Volunteers will also complete and sign the waiver form which will be available to sign the morning of the trip. Please register by Thursday, October 27th.
 
Participants should meet at the Appalachian Center at 624 Maxwelton Ct. at 7:15am on Saturday, October 29th. Volunteers should plan for to be gone for the majroity of the day returning around 7pm. 
 
Volunteers should wear long pants and boots (steel toe is not necessary) – long sleeves are recommended (layers) but not required. The Appalachian Center will provide transportation, snacks, and water. PPE will be provided by HDA, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own masks/gloves if they would like. Volunteers should plan to eat breakfast ahead of time bring their own lunch. Volunteers also encouraged to bring their own (filled) water bottle. Volunteers should plan to take a covid test ahead of the trip (an at home test should be sufficient) and please do not join us if you are ill. It is also highly recommended that you be sure to be up to date with your tetanus shot before going on the trip.
 
If for some reason you are unable to make it or need to cancel your registration, please contact Dr. Engle as soon as possible.

Charles Dodd White

Charles Dodd is the recipient of the Thomas and Lillie D. Chaffin Award for excellence in Appalachian Literature, the Appalachian Book of the Year award in fiction, a Jean Ritchie Fellowship from Lincoln Memorial University, and an individual artist’s grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. He is also an inductee in the East Tennessee Literary Hall of Fame. 

His newest book, A YEAR WITHOUT MONTHS, is a beautiful and heartbreaking memoir about grappling with the suicides of his son, father and uncle, while searching for solace in the Appalachian woods. Dr. William Turner - The Blues on Black Mountain: Stories from The Harlan Renaissance

Join us for Dr. Turner's presentation titled The Blues on Black Mountain: Stories from The Harlan Renaissance on Monday, October 17th at 5:00 pm in the UKAA Auditorium in the William T. Young Library. 

Dr. Turner's The Harlan Renaissance is the 2021 Winner of the Weatherford Award for Non-Fiction. He is a distinguished alumnus of the UK College of Arts & Sciences and a 2021 inductee into the College of Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame. 

Reception to follow at the Appalachian Center at 624 Maxwelton Ct. at approximately 6:30 pm. 

This event is co-sponsored by the Appalachian Center & Appalachian Studies Program, Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies, the Gaines Center for the Humanities, the African American and Africana Studies Program, and the Department of Sociology.

The Mountain Fiesta at Cumberland Gap, TN

The UK Appalachian Center will be tabling at the Mountain Fiesta on Saturday, September 24th starting around noon. The Mountain Fiesta is a homemade celebration of Latin American and Appalachian culture, created with the vision of giving our community the opportunity to interact, sing, dance, and learn about the beauty and diversity of Latin America.
