About the Appalachian Center

The Appalachian Center contributes to the land grant mission of the University of Kentucky by fostering community-university partnerships in research, learning and engagement in Appalachia. Located  on UK's main campus, the center is a space for students, faculty, staff and community members to join forces in learning about and educating others about this beautiful region that faces opportunities and challenges toward sustainable development in a globalized context.

The Appalachian Studies Program, like the Appalachian Center, has an active 40-year history at UK. It is an interdisciplinary program based in the College of Arts and Sciences with participation by faculty and students from across the colleges at UK. For more information on courses, affiliates and opportunities to take part in this program click HERE.

One of the opportunities associated with the center is the Graduate Appalachian Research Community, an active graduate student research network. GARC hosts Appalachia related events and meetings on and off campus and organizes an annual Symposium and Arts Showcase in Lexington. Contact the GARC officers at GARCommunity@uky.edu or visit our GARC page for more information.

Vision

Unite university and community partners to forge a just and sustainable Appalachian future together. Bring Appalachia into the classroom and take the classroom to Appalachia. Celebrate the many past, present and future voices and communities of Appalachia.

Mission

We seek to forge a just and sustainable future for youth and the region by building community-university partnerships in interdisciplinary research, creative expression, learning and engagement in transnational Appalachia.
