Graduate Appalachian Research Community

About Us
The UK Graduate Appalachian Research Community (GARC) is an official UK graduate student organization promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on Appalachian research. The group’s mission is to foster a supportive community in which students from various disciplines learn from each other's findings, discuss research obstacles and successes, can have a venue to present their Appalachian‐based research, and collaborate. We sponsor a yearly Research Symposium and Arts Showcase for student researchers and artists that typically takes place in February. The symposium is open to students of all disciplines and all academic levels in KY.

In addition to the Symposium, GARC activities include: organizing lunch meetings with campus guest lecturers with relevant interest and expertise in the broad field of Appalachian Studies; hosting organizational meetings to discuss the focus and direction of the group, plan events, elect officers, etc.; hosting discussion meetings to share our interdisciplinary interests, research, and questions; collaborating and participating in Appalachian Center events; hosting Appalachian film screenings; sharing relevant events, resources, and opportunities with colleagues via the GARC list-serve; organizing member presentations at the annual Appalachian Studies Association (ASA) Conference and other conferences with Appalachian Center support; and co-sponsoring events with other organizations who share similar interests.

Elections for student officers are held in the early fall semester of each year. Please contact the current president listed below if you would like more information.

The 2017 Symposium and Arts Showcase is scheduled for Sat-Sun, February 18-19, 2017. Check out the  2017 GARC Symposium page for more information. Registration is now open. See the Call for Participation for more information.
