Coffee Hour at the Appalachian Center

The Appalachian Center invites you to our drop-in Coffee Hour, Thursday from 10-11 AM. We welcome students, faculty, staff, and community members for coffee and light refreshments. Come visit with others interested in the region and learn more about the work of the Appalachian Center and the Appalachian Studies Program. Coffee Hour is a space to exchange ideas for programs, initiatives, and events, discuss regional issues, and share research in a casual, collegial atmosphere.

Strengthening Appalachia: Strategies Overcoming Fragility and Fostering Growth

The Lewis Honors College, the Gatton College of Business and Economics, and the College of Arts & Sciences Appalachian Center and Appalachian Studies Program are hosting Dr. Seth D. Kaplan, a leading expert on fragile states and a consultant to governments and NGOs worldwide. In his bestselling book, Fragile Neighborhoods, he offers a bold new vision for addressing social decline in America, one zip code at a time, by revitalizing our local institutions.

Following Dr. Kaplan's remarks will be a panel discussion moderated by UK MBA/JD alumna Ariana Strider. The panelists include:
  • Hon. Angie Hatton, Chair of Kentucky Public Service Commission, former Kentucky House Representative for 94th District
  • Richard Young, Founder and Executive Director of CivicLex
  • Dr. Alison Davis, Executive Director, UK Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky
  • Dr. Kathryn Engle, Director of the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center
