Martin County Water

Martin County Water

In October of 2000, 300 millions gallons of coal slurry flooded Martin County's waterways, contaminating the water with arsenic, lead, and mercury and killing everything in the streams. This, combined with a crumbling infrastructure, means that Martin County residents haven't been able to trust their tap water in nearly two decades, with some describing the water from their faucets as cloudy, dark, and reeking of chemicals. A team of UK students, many hailing from Martin County have rallied around the issue and are working with the Appalachian Center to move Martin County into the spotlight toward a future of clean, safe water.
