The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center and Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement are excited to announce that the AppalachiaCorps program will be continuing in Summer 2022.
ApppalachiaCorps connects students with organizations in Eastern Kentucky and the greater Appalachian region, providing them a summer internship opportunity concentrating on their career goals. Participants will obtain valuable leadership and networking skills during this internship, preparing them for future jobs and placements.
Students in the past have interned at organizations such as Appalachian Citizens Law Center, Highlands Museum & Discovery Center, Pikeville Medical Center, and Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network (LiKEN).
“After a very successful summer 2021 internship program, we are thrilled to again offer internship opportunities for students through our AppalachiaCorps program,” said Kathryn Engle, Ph.D., the director of the Appalachian Center at UK. “Interested students should check out our website and fill out an inquiry from and attend one of our informational meetings. Organizations interested in hosting a student should also submit an application form on our website.”
The Appalachian Center has informational meetings coming up in a few weeks and are currently taking inquiries from students. Participation in the program is on a first-come, first-served basis and preference will be given to students who can make their own arrangements with host organizations.
The first information session will be held 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at The Appalachian Center, located at 624 Maxwelton Court. There will also be a Zoom option.
Additional information sessions will take place Feb. 15, March 28 and April 11.
The internship program is available to all UK undergraduate and graduate students in good standing. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students can come from any discipline. Students in the UK College of Arts and Sciences, from the Appalachian region, who are first generation and those working through the Federal Work-Study program are strongly encouraged to apply.
