"Water Stories: Martin County" Film Screening and Panel Discussion

Join us for a screening of Water Stories: Martin County by filmmaker Kate Levy followed by a panel discussion with community organizers Nina McCoy, Martin County Concerned Citizens; Mickey McCoy, Martin County Concerned Citizens; Ricki Draper, Appalachian Citizens' Law Center; Madison Mooney, UK College of Social Work Master's Student, Jason Unrine, UK Plant & Soil Science. The film will begin in the William T Young Library UKAA Auditorium at 3:15 and a reception will follow at the William T. Young Library Alumni Gallery.

Where Does Our Water Come From? Speaker Forum

Join us for our first event of Water Week! We will be hosting a forum with speakers focusing on the theme of ecology, considering questions such as "Where does our water come from?" The speaker forum will start at 4:30 pm in the UKAA Auditorium of the William T. Young Library. Steven Evans (Associate Director of the Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute at UK) will be presenting "Watershed Planning: A Case Study from Letcher County, Kentucky." Erika Hernandez (Doctoral Student specializing in Water Distribution Modeling) will be presenting "At the tap: an overview of drinking water infrastructure." Amanda Gumbert (Extension Water Quality Specialist with UK's College of Agriculture, Food and Environment) will be presenting "A Glimpse Into Lexington Watersheds."

Water Week

Water Week is a student-led series of events sponsored by the UK Appalachian Center to bring awareness to issues relating to water in eastern Kentucky and beyond.

 

DAY 1: Monday, November 18

Ecology - “Where Does Our Water Come From?” Speaker Forum

Fieldtrip to Stearns: Big South Fork Scenic Railway

Join Mountain Cats & the Appalachian Center on a fieldtrip to Stearns, Kentucky, and a ride on the Big South Fork Senic Railway. Pre-registration is required and spaces are limited. This is an all day trip and transportation and food will be provided.

Water Week Student Planning Meeting

Students interested in getting involved with planning events and initiatives relating to water access and water quality in eastern Kentucky are invited to attend this student-led planning meeting at the Appalachian Center at 624 Maxwelton Ct. on Friday, September 13th at 6:00 pm. Pizza will be provided.
