Brown Graduate Student Award for Research on Appalachia recipient, Erfan Saidi Moqadam (Anthropology) will present Reconstituting Religious Identity: Multivocal Religiosity in the Appalachian Iranian Diaspora.This is a catered event open to all UK students, faculty, and staff. The Laurel County African-American Heritage Center (LCAAHC) is beginning the “African Americans in the Tri-County Area Oral History Project.” Join us for a community oral history training to learn how to conduct oral history interviews. Stipends are available for community members to conduct interviews. UK Athletics is partnering with the UK Mountain Cats and the Appalachian Center on UK’s campus to begin yearly service excursions to Eastern Kentucky.
Twenty-five student-athletes and staff members will participate in the inaugural trip, traveling to Harlan, Kentucky, June 21-23 for a three-day, two-night service experience. This group will be embarking on service opportunities, working directly with non-profit organizations in the Harlan area. This inaugural trip is designed to reach out to an often underserved region of Kentucky, as well as to provide educational opportunities to student-athletes and staff about this particular region of Kentucky.

This project seeks to explore, document, and share African American experiences in southeastern Kentucky, especially Knox, Laurel, and Whitley Counties. Oral history interviews will give insight into the lives and contributions of African Americans in the Tri-County area. A research team of the project co-directors, community researchers, and project consultants will work together through the Laurel County African American Heritage Center to conduct oral histories in order to highlight diverse voices in the community and broaden the narrative about the history of the area. As part of the "Appalachian Forum" series, the UK Appalachian Center will host a film screening and discussion with filmmaker, William Isom, Director of the "Black in Appalachia" project. Isom will be screening "Knoxville's Red Summer: Riot of 1919" on Monday, October 28, 2019 at 5:00 pm. The screening will be held at the William T. Young Library UKAA Auditorium. There will be a reception open to all UK students, faculty, staff and open to the community with free food to follow the event at the UK Appalachian Center - 624 Maxwelton Court.
