Conversations with Gurney feat. Robert Gipe

Robert Gipe, author and illustrator of the critically acclaimed novels Trampoline and Weedeater, joined the Appalachian Center's scholar-in-residence, Gurney Norman for a visit and reading. Since 1997, Robert has served as the Director of the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. Through his fiction and work with the community-theater project, Higher Ground in Harlan, Kentucky, Robert has tackled tough issues in the mountains including drug abuse, environmental degradation, mining, outmigration, and discrimination.

60 Years on Stinking Creek: The Story of the Lend-A-Hand Center

Irma Gall, co-founder of the Lend-A-Hand Center, will be on campus to share her new experiences working on Stinking Creek for the past 60 years. Located in Walker, Kentucky, the Center has served the Stinking Creek community through health, education, agricultural, and children's programs since 1958. Irma is a farmer and school teacher who is involved in Appalachian service work and active in the war on poverty. We welcomed Irma to campus on Monday, November 26th from 5-6:30PM at the Niles Gallery in the Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library for her presentation, and enjoyed a full day spent learning about her life's work and passion!
