UK Students, Staff, and Faculty are welcome to join the UK Appalachian Center for a trip to tour the Benham Coal Museum in Benham, KY on Saturday, April 25, 2015.  The group will meet at the UK Appalachian Center (624 Maxwelton Court) to leave by bus at 8 a.m. and return to Lexington by about 8 p.m.  This tour is an opportunity to learn about the history of coal mining in eastern, KY through exhibits on company towns, viewing a mine portal, and hearing from scholars including Dr. Bill Turner on life in Benham and Lynch, KY throughout time.  This is a free event, and we will accommodate as many as we can!  Please RSVP by email to erin.norton@uky.edu to reserve a space on the bus by Thursday, April 16, 2015. The UK Appalachian Center is proud to welcome Saakshi Joshi, a Visiting Fulbright Scholar.  Ms. Joshi is giving a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Talk from 12 - 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015 here at the Center.  This talk is free and open to Students, Faculty, and Staff to attend.  Her talk is entitled, Dammed Memories: Narratives of Belonging among Tehri Dam-displaced People in Uttarakhand, India.

The UK Appalachian Center is proud to welcome Crystal Wilkinson for a mini-residency that will include an Appalachian Forum entitled: Birds of Opulence: Black Women, Madness, and Resilience in Appalachia.  This event is free, open to the public, and will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2015 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the UK Law School's Auditorium (please, enter through the Memorial Hall side entrance of the building).  Ms. Wilkinson will give a public reading and hold a discussion with attendees.  There is a public reception at the UK Appalachian Center, 624 Maxwelton Court from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. before the reading and discussion.

The UK Appalachian Center is hosting a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Meeting from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2015.  Two of five 2014 Brown Award recipients, Lindsay Shade and Kathryn Engle will be presenting on their research.  Each presenter has research interests in Appalachia and is a graduate students at the University of Kentucky.

Young Library.  This year's keynote speaker is Lisa Conley, Ph.D. Her research interests focus on foodways, environmental sustainability, and local food politics in motivating the self-provisioning practices of people in rural and urban Kentucky.  Please, find more information about registration or proposal submition here: https://appalachiancenter.as.uky.edu/annual-research-symposium.  The deadline to submit abstracts is February 15, 2015.  Registration for presenters and non-presenters is free.  Undergraduate and Graduate students are welcome to register.

The UK Appalachian Center welcomes Dr. Rebecca Klenk from the University of Tennessee Knoxville.  She will be giving a talk entitled Global Uttarakhand: Development, Neoliberalism and Social Justice in Himalayan India as a part of our Appalachian Forum Series on Civil Rights, Labor and Environmental Social Movements in Appalachia.  Her talk will be held in the Niles Gallery from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015.  A reception will follow at the UK Appalachian Center from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The UK Appalachian Center is proud to host a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Meeting with our 2014 Summer Mini-Grant Recipients.  Dr. Robin Vanderpool is a faculty memeber in the Department of Health Behavior.  Dr. Kang Namkoong is faculty in the Department of Community Leadership and Development in the College of Ag.  Michelle Justus Talbott is a graduate student here at the University of Kentucky.  All of the applicants have research interests and focus in Appalachia.  This meeting will be held from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UK Appalachian Center on Thrusday, April 2, 2015.
