This panel of historians and representatives of federal volunteer programs discuss 50 years of US War on Poverty investments in social change in Appalachia through youth service programs, from the Appalachian Volunteers in the 1069s to current Teach for America and VISTA volunteers.

Roads are products of the places they wind through and have rich histories that modern drivers often ignore. Travelers have not always been able to take them for granted, however, particularly in the mountainous regions of Appalachia in the days before cars.

Assistance to Appalachian KY communities hit by tornadoes

Here are some ways you can help:

The University of Kentucky Geographical Society is partnering with St. Vincent Mission in David, KY., to provide school supplies to students in Magoffin County. You may drop off donations at the UK Appalachian Center by March 26. A drop box for donations has also been placed in the Geography Department mailroom and will be collected through March 23rd. Donations will be delivered to St. Vincent’s Mission on March 27th.
