Please, join us for the 8th Annual GARC (Graduate Appalachian Research Community) Symposium and Arts Showcase!  This event will be held on Saturday, February 18th, 2017 at the UK Law Building Courtroom. The specific daily schedule is currently being written and will be updated soon. The keynote panel this year includes a highly-esteemed group of speakers: Crystal Wilkinson, Dwight Billings, Ivy Brashear, and Robert Gipe. Undergraduate and Graduate students with research and work pertaining to Appalachia, from all Colleges and Universities, and from all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to submit poster and presentations proposals through the GARC website abstract submission form. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, February 1, 2017 by midnight. Students are not required to present to attend. We do ask that all presenters and non-presenters register to attend by midnight on Monday, February 6, 2017. We are very excited to announce the 2016 Sustainability Fourm here on UK's Campus!  This event is brought to you by the Tracy Farmer Institute on Sustainability and the Environment and the UK Appalachian Center. Students may submit their posters/presentations online here: http://tfise.uky.edu/showcase by Sunday, November 20, 2016. Students will present their work on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Hillary J. Boone Center at 4:30 p.m.  Awards for the best posters/presentations will be announced at 6:30 p.m. Please, see the showcase's webpage for more information, and join us at the event!  Please, encourage other students with sustainability-focused work and research to submit and attend.

This SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) event will feature talks by two recipients of 2016 UK Appalachian Center Eller and Billings Student Research Awards.  Kathryn Engle presents Stinking Creek Stories: Life, Agriculture, and Community in Rural Southeastern Kentucky; Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth presents "You can make a tree sing: that's the magic": Musical Instrument Makers and the Re-enchantment of Livelihood and Material in West Virginia.  Both awardees are UK Graduate Students.  This is a free event for UK Students, Faculty, and Staff!

Please, join us at the UK Appalachian Center as we welcome Henry Bundy for a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Talk on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  This talk is entitled Mental Distress and Surplus Populations In Upstate South Carolina.  Henry was one of our 2015 recipients of the Eller & Billings Student Research Awards, and this talk is about his current research project which has been funded, in part, by the award. This is a free event for students, faculty, and staff; we welcome you!

Please, join the UK Appalachian Center, Special Collections Library, and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures for a very exciting Event as a part of the Arts & Sciences Year of Europe. This event is free for all UK Students, Faculty, and Staff and will be located in the M. I. King Special Collections Library on the 2nd floor on Thursday, March 3, 2016.  Italian language students will read selected poems from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.  This will be followed by an exhibit entilted The Immigrant Experience and Contribution in Appalachian Coalfields from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Light refreshements will be served.

Please, join us on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 for a very special event!  As a part of the Arts & Sciences Passport to the World, Year of Europe, the UK Appalachian Center welcomes Alessandro Portelli for a talk entitled Roma Forestiera: Migrant Music in Rome.  The talk will be held in the UKAA Auditorium in W. T. Young Library from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.  This will be followed by a reception with light refreshments from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Alumni Gallery.  A screening of the film Matewan will be offered in the Auditorium from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with an introduction by Professor Portelli.  This event is free for UK Students, Faculty, and Staff.
